Linkages between indoor heat-stress hazard and vulnerability
Research Module 2.1 "Indoor Observations" and Research Module 3.2 "Urban Vulnerability" have to rely on a questionnaires study. For RM 2.1, information from several individuals about their perception of heat stress, self-estimated vulnerability and measures to reduce heat stress (air-conditioning, ventilators, shadowing of windows during day-time, opening of windows during night- time, adapted clothing, drinking etc.) is essential. RM 3.2 needs individual information on vulnerability and self-estimated vulnerability and risk of selected groups of the city population. The research link between the two modules aims to facilitate the study and increase the sample of the survey.
A target group is selected according to the identified vulnerability and risk categories (e.g. elderly, children, high sealing degree in living neighbourhood). Occupants of buildings in which the indoor measurements take place are also included in a survey.
RM 2.1 uses quantitative statistical approaches to test correlations between the survey outcomes and different bio-thermal indices. These results help us to identify an appropriate index to characterize indoor heat stress. Results are also analysed using qualitative and semi-quantitative approaches by RM 3.2 to identify new categories and interrelationships between the variables as well as weights of the variables of the model.
