Urban climate projections

Two major developments form the background of the urban climate projections:

  1. global emission scenarios for greenhouse gases,
  2. urban development in Berlin causing modified urban patterns of land cover.

The Research Module 1.1 "Regional Climate" and Research Module 5.1 "Constellations" are responsible for the selection of three different alternative scenarios for global emission scenarios on which the urban climate projections will be based. RM 5.1 and Research Module 5.2 "Urban patterns" define basic assumptions for three alternative scenarios for computing of projections of urban development. The projections will then be used for computing projections of urban land cover changes.

RM 1.1 compute regional- to urban-scale climate projections for the combinations of global emission scenarios and urban land-cover projections by applying the CCLM/BEP resulting in nine different regional- to meso-scale climate projections that are, however, not directly applicable for quantifying the changes in the heat-stress hazards.

Research Module 1.2 "Urban Climate" using the three projections of urban land cover resulting in three meso- to local-scale projections of urban climates. These projections do, however, not consider regional atmospheric changes.
