Effectiveness of actions for reducing heat-stress risks

The sub-projects using conceptual or numerical models will perform qualitative and quantitative sensitivity studies for those actions covered by their models. The identification of the actions has to consider the findings of the other sub-projects.

The Research Module 1.2 "Urban climate" uses WRF, MetPhoMod, ENVI-met and SOLWEIG simulations, as well as statistical relations for sensitivity studies for the warm seasons concerning local-scale modifications of urban land cover (including urban green) and micro-scale modifications of buildings (including building green).

Further, regional simulations of climate change (Research Module 1.1 "Regional Climate") and micro-scale simulations (Research Module 1.2 "Urban Climate") deliver data of future outdoor conditions. These results will give hints on adaptation strategies to climate change in urban planning showing the effectiveness of actions to reduce indoor heat-stress risks.

For the selected room configurations the effectiveness of actions for reducing heat-stress risks (e.g. architectural, structural and A/C-measures) shall be estimated by comparative room simulation analysis. The aim for the Research Module 3.1 "Medical Vulnerability" in this Research Cluster is it to integrate our first results into an effectiveness calculation to figure out the effectiveness of room cooling in hospitals for vulnerable patient groups.

The contribution of the sub-project 4.3 "Building Technologies" is the analysis of a representative subset of A/C-systems with respect to their limits of use under varying outdoor conditions. Developed methodologies and models allow a detailed projection of the capacity of the different A/C-systems and therefore are used for the analysis of the limitations of use.

The contribution of the Research Module 5.2 "Urban Patterns" are sensitivity studies uncovering the effectiveness of structural related actions (e.g. modifications of buildings, urban greening) as well as behavioural related actions (e.g. removal).
